#113 Four

The old Idaho State Penitentiary in Boise closed in the 70s after the new one was built. On a recent trip I toured the old facility and grieved at how people have to live when incarcerated. Yep - there are four beds in this cell. Not much personal space and no choice of roommates. It's easy to understand how the boredom and close quarters leads to trouble.

  1. I love the crystal clear view through the jail bars.

  2. The old brick building is very imposing. There is no room to move in the cell. I can not imagine the horror of being locked into such a small barred room with three other people.

  3. Too bad there can't be a trial period in a cell like this for those young people who are at risk so they can see that this is no place to spend a good share of their life. A picture's worth a thousand words.

  4. I wonder how much of a deterrent that accomodation proved to be for those who experienced it due to their criminal actions?
It would be nice to think that it made them think twice.

  5. a miserable place to spend any amount of time. I wonder how much of an improvement the new penitentiary is.

  6. We went through there last September, and it was the best $5 I have ever spent (actually $4, since they give a AAA discount.) That place is fantastic! Pretty weird that that fancy gallows only saw one execution, since most of the hangings were done in the rose garden so more people could witness it. They have done a great job presenting the prison as it was when in use. Hope you obeyed the signs and didn't "loaf."
